When we first started flashcards with her at the age of 4 months, she was pretty focused. After a while though, her attention span got shorter and shorter, especially when she started to become more and more mobile.
Also, we could not be sure how much of the words she actually absorbed, as the method did not really teach her the meaning of the words. We kept at it though, but because we did not want to ‘force’ her to read when she was clearly disinterested, our sessions would get increasingly shorter and shorter each time.

When she was 9 months old, we discovered a different teaching method, and we were amazed at what the author's daughter could do and read at the age of 9 months. We purchased the tools we needed and we started showing her the DVDs as well as the books.
She absolutely loved them, especially the DVDs.
But again, we hit a speed bump -
Although the DVDs taught Felicity the words' meanings and was fun and entertaining, the lessons were impersonal and inflexible, and we were stuck to teaching her in front of the television.
In an effort to personalize the learning experience more, we also made our own books using photos we took ourselves with our own digital camera and printed out at a nearby photo shop. We made about 10 or more books, in English and Chinese, and of different word categories like animals, action words, etc.
When we started showing her the books, she couldn't get enough of them! After finishing with one book, she would fuss to be shown the next one, until we had to encourage her to take a break after about 5 books in a row. The personalized books were tremendously effective, but we realized that making them was very expensive and time consuming, which always left me thinking…
“Surely There Has To Be A Better Way

We began creating slideshows with Microsoft PowerPoint - this let us fully personalize the lessons as we added our own voices, pictures and sound effects.
The slideshows entertained Felicity, and she loved being able to see her parents, objects around her home, and her own things shown to her on screen. We believe this greatly added to her understanding of the words we taught her, and we were grateful for such an inexpensive way to personalize her lessons.
… Our only dismay was that we were stuck to teaching her in front of a computer, and it was time consuming trying to look for the media we needed to keep on creating new lessons for her.
Using all the methods above, we were very pleased with the results we achieved. She started recognizing words as early as about 2 weeks after 9 months. Although this video we shot that shows her reading words was made after her first birthday, she could already read most of the words there when she was 11 months old.
Most importantly, we discovered that Felicity has developed a great love for reading!
She would actually prefer books over her toys! Often, she would grab a book and bring it over to me or her Daddy for us to read it to her, and at other times, she would just ‘play’ with the books herself, sometimes making quite a racket with her babbling! To keep her reading materials fresh and not spend a bomb on buying books, we now go to the local library and borrow children books for her to read.
To round off, I think that one of the most important things to remember is never to force your baby into things such as reading.
We always make sure that her experience with such things is a positive and joyful one, and to have the discipline to stop ‘feeding’ her books or whatever when she shows that she is no longer interested.
Is she a happy baby?
She certainly is!
Although she will occasionally fuss and throw a tantrum when she doesn’t get what she wants, she is generally a fun-loving, energetic, and bubbly girl who never ceases to put us (as well as herself!) into fits of laughter!
