Understanding the Curriculum

The Little Reader Learning System comes with a parent-tested and educator-approved early reading curriculum, giving you a day-to-day guide for teaching your baby! The curriculum includes words and subjects you can teach for each day, so you'll never be lost when it comes to your baby's education!

Comprehensive in its scope and design, our curriculum will guide your child in a systematic and progressive fashion: from sight-reading single words, to sounding out groups of words, to reading complete stories by the end!

Curriculum duration (course length)

The Little Reader Curriculum extends over a 12-month period, split into two 6-month Semesters. On purchase, you will have a choice between getting Semester 1 only (6 months' worth of lesson content) or getting Semester 1+2 which has the full 12-month curriculum content.

Lesson frequency

The curriculum is designed to be shown once or twice a day, and on weekdays in case it is not convenient to teach on weekends.

What's in a session?

Each Little Reader session is divided into these lesson segments:

    A. (Word Flash)

  • Word Flash is used to teach words through the flash method. Words will auto-forward rapidly and take less than a minute to play.
  • What's good about this method?
  • B. (Multisensory)

  • Multisensory gives you the opportunity to teach at a leisurely pace and interact with your child. You will control the speed of the lesson, and manually move between words.
  • What's good about this method?
  • C. (Picture Flash)

  • Picture Flash is like Word Flash, except this time we are teaching the meanings of words through the flash method. This will effectively reinforce what your child has learned during B (Multisensory).
  • What's good about this method?
  • D. (Pattern Phonics™)

  • From the fifth week onwards, your child will not only learn to sight-read, but will also be guided to decode the written language in an intuitive manner.
  • What's good about this method?
  • E. (Story Time)

  • Towards the end of the curriculum, your child will learn to read not only simple sentences, but even complete stories! Story Time gives you another opportunity to teach your child at your own pace, and manually move between each sentence in the story.
  • What's good about this method?

Lesson duration

Each session requires only 5-10 minutes, depending on how much time you take to interact with your child during the multisensory lessons. After the scheduled lessons, you may also choose to keep going as long as your child is interested. The time after a session is a good opportunity to show customized words as well as any categories that particularly interest your child.

Word rotation

Every day one word will be retired and one new word added to each category of your lessons. When the end of a category is reached, the first word retired will return.

Media files and content

Each word file adheres to BrillKids standards, and comes with 3 professionally recorded voices, 3-5 quality images, 2-4 picture audio (word commentaries or sound effects) and - to help better illustrate things and concepts such as animals, action words and stories - 1-3 videos!
